Jharkhand:-
Jharkhand leads in coal production and coal reserves in the country. The important coal fields are Jharia, Giridih, North Karanpura, South Karanpura, Ramgarh, Bokaro and Daltonganj. The Jharia coalfield is the largest in India and produces the best coking coal.
Orissa:-
Orissa ranks second in coal reserves. The important coalfields are Talcher and Rampur situated in the Mahanadi basin.
Madhya Pradesh:-
Madhya Pradesh has large coal reserves. The major coal mines are Umaria, Sohagpur and Singrauli.
Chhattisgarh:-
Chhattisgarh has large coal reserves. Korba is the most important coal mine. Other mines are Chirimiri, Jhilimili and Bishrampur.
West Bengal:-
West Bengal ranks fourth in coal reserves. Important coalfields are Raniganj and Mejia in Bankura district. Raniganj is the second largest coalfield in India.
Andhra Pradesh:-
Andhra Pradesh occupies fifth position in coal reserves. Major coalfields are Singareni, Tandur, Kothagudem and Yellandu.
Maharashtra:-
Maharashtra holds sixth position in coal reserves. Major coalfields are in Nagpur-Wardha region — Wardha, Ballarpur, Chanda and Kampati.
Lignite coal occurs in Neyveli (Tamil Nadu), Pallu (Rajasthan), Masi (Kashmir) and parts of Assam and Meghalaya. The largest deposits are at Neyveli in South Arcot district.
