Wire Rope Types

Wire Rope Types:-

Wire Rope Types

are identified primarily by construction. The number of strands and the geometric arrangement of wires within the strands make up the wire rope construction.
The more common constructions are shown above. Note that each construction can have more wires than shown, but the geometry remains the same. For example, there can be two operations ropes having more than 19 wires; there can be Seale ropes having more than 19 wires; there can be Warrington ropes having more than 19 wires and there can be Filler Wire types having more (or less) than 25 wires.
Here are the basic constructions.
Each of the above possesses unique characteristics which must be considered when selecting rope or strand for a job. The specific geometric construction selected depends on the destructive factors present on the job.

Wire Rope Construction:-

The most common factors, abrasion and fatigue, create conflicting requirements. Small (more numerous) outer wires resist fatigue but are easily worn through by abrasion. Larger outer wires have superior abrasion resistance but are more quickly broken by bending and flexing. The difference in outer wire size is seen between the 6 x 19 Seal and 6 x 25 Filler Wire constructions. The nine outer wires in the Seale strands are clearly larger than the 12 outer wires in the Filler Wire strands. Other destructive factors must be considered: peening, corrosion, heat, crushing and shock loads.

Classification

Each wire rope construction falls within a classification. Classifications are identified by the number of strands and nominal number of wires. The actual number of wires must fall within a range specified for the given class. For example, ropes within the 6 x 19 class contain 6 strands made up of 15 through 26 wires of which no more than 12 are outside wire. The 6 x 19 Seale and 6 x 25 Filler Wire constructions therefore are both within this class. The more common classifications are 7 x 7, 7 x 19, 6 x 26, 6 x 36 and 19 x 7.

6 x 19 Classification Wire Rope

  • Strands: 6
  • Wires/Strands: 15 – 26 Core: FC, IWRC
  • Grade: IPS, EIPS, Corrosion Resistant
This class is most widely used and is found in it variations throughout nearly all industries. With its good combination of flexibility and wear resistance, rope in this class can be suited to the specific needs of diverse kinds of machinery and equipment. As will be seen, the designation of 6 x 19 is only nominal. 6 x 19 classification wire ropes provide an excellent balance between fatigue and wear resistance. They will give long service with sheaves and drums of moderate size. The 6 x 26 rope is the most flexible rope in this classification, and is the most widely used.

6 x 37 Classification Wire Rope

  • Strands: 6
  • Wires/Strands: 27 – 49 Core: FC, IWRC
  • Grade: IPS, EIPS, Corrosion Resistant
6 x 37 classification wire ropes find broad use on traveling cranes, mining & earth moving equipment, and various heavy-duty hoisting and industrial equipment applications. 6 x 37 classification wire ropes have a third layer of wire which makes them more flexible, although less abrasion resistant than ropes of the 6 x 19 classification. Each strand contains numerous, comparatively small diameter wires. As the number of wires in each strand is increased, flexibility is increased.

Specialty Ropes

19 x 7 Rotation Resistant - Wire Strand Core

According to Federal Specification RR-W-410D, WSC, bright, medium lube. preformed, EIPS

19x7 Rotation- Resistant Wire Rope is a special class of rope designed to resist the tendency to spin or rotate under load. This is achieved by laying 6 strands around the core in one direction, then laying12 strands around the first operation in another direction. It is often used for hoisting unguided loads with a single part rope. This unique design does, however, impose certain limitations on the rope's application and handling.

Superflex - High Strength Wire Rope

By flattening the surface of outer wires of each strand, this Plane Contacting Lay construction has flat touch area of outer wires comparing round strand type rope. This flat touch area enables longer life of each wire before breaking. While designing this construction, we emphasized the optimal balance between high tensile strength, fatigue resistance, abrasion resistance, and structural stability. Superflex rope is widely used in various applications such as winchline, craneline, fishing and mining.

Benefits

  • Superior Flexibility
  • Longer Drum and Sheave Life
  • High Resistance to Deformation
  • Longer Life of Wire before Breaking
  • High Breaking Load
  • Strong against Corrosion
  • Excellent Abrasion-Resistance

Galvanized Aircraft Cable

Pre-formed galvanized aircraft cable is recommended whenever high strength, resistance to fatigue and minimum stretch is required.
7 x 7 is flexible
7 x 19 is extra flexible
