Construction & Roadwork Safety Guidelines

Objective

The purpose of this SOP is to establish safe and efficient operating procedures for grader (GREDAR) operators in construction and roadwork projects.

Scope

This SOP applies to all grader operators, site supervisors, and project managers engaged in grading and leveling tasks.

Main Responsibilities

  • Operate the grader safely and efficiently according to site requirements.
  • Conduct pre-start checks of brakes, lights, hydraulics, and tires.
  • Follow site safety rules and speed limits.
  • Maintain clear communication with ground staff.
  • Document daily operational records and report faults.

Step-by-Step Operating Procedure

  • Check fuel, oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid levels.
  • Inspect blades, tires, and cutting edges for damage.
  • Ensure all safety devices are functional.
  • Ensure the grader is in neutral position before starting.
  • Allow the engine to warm up at idle speed.
  • Verify gauges and warning lights are functioning correctly.
  • Operate at safe speeds, avoiding sharp turns on slopes.
  • Maintain steady blade contact for even grading.
  • Keep a safe distance from workers and other equipment.
  • Lower the blade to the ground before shutdown.
  • Allow the engine to idle for 2–3 minutes before switching off.
  • Remove keys and lock out equipment if required.

Safety Precautions

  • Always wear PPE (helmet, gloves, reflective vest, safety boots).
  • Do not operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Be aware of underground utilities and obstacles.
  • Communicate using hand signals or radios when visibility is low.
